It's that time of year again. Dust off your boots, slip on your stilettos and strap on your drum. It's the fifth annual SLC Dyke March. Why do we march? We march for freedom, for power, for visibility, for sisterhood, for love, for control of our bodies and our identities, for self-defense, for dignity, for human rights, for our children, for joy, for liberation, for sex, for equality, for justice, for our lives, for ALL women, forever. |
We march to celebrate our community: the mommy - dykes and the baby-dykes, the gender-transcenders, the butches and the femmes, the leather lovers and the latinas, the bis and the bois, the blue collar dykes and the high collar lesbians, the grannies and the trannies, the softball sisters and the differently-abled , the indigenous women, the asian and african and middle-eastern women, and yes, all those white bred women who call themselves dykes. |

We started this march to promote positive visibility of our community. We want everyone to see how beautiful we are in our differences, and how powerful we are in our sameness. This is a grass roots, corporate free event. We won't be riding in floats and passing out plastic key chains with a logo from our "gay friendly" sponsors. We won't buy in and sell out. We WILL be marching, closing down State Street, proudly walking past the Temple, demanding recognition. |
On this day we are fearless, because we march in solidarity with our sisters, heads held high and hearts open. We march for our common goals: an end to violence and oppression, happy and healthy children, safety, equality, respect. On this day we invite ALL dykes of all classes, cultures, faiths, ages and abilities to join us. We respectfully invite our brothers to support us from the sidelines. |
